November 2015 MINUTES!

Hello SAND-IU! Here’s what we wrapped up during our last meeting of the semester:

On November 7th, IAND (Indiana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) had a full board meeting that consisted of a conference call from 10am-12pm. In the meeting they talked about the budget for next year and discussed policy initiative. They were encouraging to vote for the Scope of Practice Rule, and if this passes, then dietitians will have licensure instead of certification. They also talked about the Therapeutic Diet Orders Rule, which will allow dietitians to order special diets and tests for patients without needing physician approval. IAND also has a Facebook and Twitter and would love for you to follow them! Hooray! Brownie Math and Science was a success! SAND-IU partnered with Eta Sigma Gamma, a national professional health science honorary organization. There were 5 groups of girls doing 30 minutes of rotations, and they did activities on MyPlate, influenza vaccination, and a physical activity. The sessions improved throughout the day and the girls participated and enjoyed it! The last volunteer opportunity of the semester will be the cookie fundraiser! This cookie baking party will take place on Wednesday, December 9th at 4pm in the N120 foods lab. We could always use more volunteers because the more we can sell, the more money we make, and the quicker the process will be for everyone! We plan on delivering the cookies on either Thursday evening (December 10th) or Friday morning (December 11th), so any volunteers for this would also be helpful. *If you wish to volunteer for this event please contact Lindsey Emmons at laemmons@umail.iu.edu. Seniors!!! If you need help or tips about applying for dietetic internships a great resource you can use is All Access Internships. Juniors and underclassmen, you should check out this website as well. Being well prepared and well informed about the interview process, personal statements, applications, and more can help you immensely when it comes to getting matched for an internship. It’s never too early to start thinking about your future as RDs! Note from Vicky: DI and DPD directors have mixed feelings about All Access Internships. Whether or not you use that resource is up to you, of course, but let me say that anything they will tell you about the DI process, I’ll be telling you about the DI process, and you won’t have to pay for it. The bigger concern, however, is the rating of dietetic internships. Please realize that those ratings are opinions of individuals who might have had a negative (or positive!) experience that someone else wouldn’t have. So please keep an open mind. *All Access Internships Website: www.allaccessinternships.com Finally, if you did not pay your dues by the meeting tonight, unfortunately, you cannot be considered an active member. If for some reason, you could not make the meetings this semester, be sure to join us next semester for meetings when locations and times are announced.

I hope everyone’s finals go smoothly and that everyone has a fantastic holiday break!
